The California Internal Revenue Service, following the IRS, has extended the tax filing deadline for most Californians.
As you know, The California Franchise Tax Board previously gave an extension to file tax returns until May 15; after the IRS extended the date for federal taxes to October 16, the California IRS no longer announced new deadlines.
Now the date for filing tax returns and paying taxes has been extended by the Golden State IRS as well, but the change only applies to residents of winter storm-affected counties and does not apply to residents and businesses located in Lassen, Modoc and Shasta counties.
As announced by Governor Newsom, California individuals and businesses affected by the 2022-2023 winter storms are eligible for an extension to file and pay taxes through October 16, 2023:- Individuals whose tax returns and payments are due by April 18, 2023.- Quarterly estimated tax payments due January 17, 2023, March 15, 2023, April 18, 2023, June 15, 2023, and September 15, 2023.
- Business entities whose tax returns are generally due on March 15 and April 18.- Selective Transit Entity (PTE) tax payments due March 15, 2023 and June 15, 2023.
Taxpayers are also eligible to claim a disaster loss deduction on their tax return.
Residents and businesses in Lassen, Modoc and Shasta counties must file returns and pay taxes by the due dates:
- Individuals whose tax returns and payments are due by April 18, 2023.
- Quarterly estimated tax payments due January 17, 2023, March 15, 2023, April 18, 2023, June 15, 2023, and September 15, 2023.
- Business entities whose tax returns are generally due on March 15 and April 18.
- Elective PTE tax payments due on March 15, 2023 and June 15, 2023.
